DESCRIPTION:Chris Dooley\, Foreign Editor with The Irish Times and author o
f “Redmond A Life Undone” will talk about John Redmond\, focusing on Redmo
nd and the Irish Party’s response to the Easter Rising. Redmond described
the Rising as “wicked” and “insane” and regarded it as a major set back to
the cause of Irish independence. Those views appear very odd now and out
of step with majority thinking\, but at the time Redmond was reflecting th
e popular view. Chris will place Redmond’s life and times in context. His
book brings to life seven pivotal years in Irish history\, when the campai
gn for Home Rule seized the nation and brought Ireland to the brink of a n
egotiated settlement with Britain. The architect of this campaign was John
Redmond\, the shrewd and assured leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

\n \n\nDe clan Kiberd\, literary critic\, scholar and Professor of English at UCD and Notre Dame will mark the centenary of 1916 and the publication of Joyce’s ‘Portrait of the Artist’ with a talk on Joyce\, Pearse and 1916 .\n\n \;\n\nThis lecture will take two figures who are often assumed t o be polar opposites\, with Joyce cast as cosmopolitan sophisticate and Pe arse as zealous nationalist. It will argue that\, on the contrary\, both m en had far more in common than most commentators have cared to admit - in their ideas of art\, mythology\, education and national identity. On that basis\, it will offer a new “overview” of the meaning of the Easter Rising as an example of “modernism in the streets”.
