, a biography which brings to life a man who helped launch the 1916 Rising
. Born 16th January 1877 in New Ross\, Micheal was instrumental in setting
up the first branch of the Gaelic League in Carlow. He also helped found
the workingman’s club in Carlow\, which he left when they decided to admit
a British soldier. After moving to Dublin\, he played important roles in
both Sinn Fein and the Irish Volunteers. As quartermaster of the Volunteer
s\, he was responsible for the procurement of many of the arms used in the
  Easter Rising.\n\nCall 051 421877 to book your place.\n\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:Chris Dooley\, Foreign Editor with The Irish Times and author o
f “Redmond A Life Undone” will talk about John Redmond\, focusing on Redmo
nd and the Irish Party’s response to the Easter Rising. Redmond described
the Rising as “wicked” and “insane” and regarded it as a major set back to
the cause of Irish independence. Those views appear very odd now and out
of step with majority thinking\, but at the time Redmond was reflecting th
e popular view. Chris will place Redmond’s life and times in context. His
book brings to life seven pivotal years in Irish history\, when the campai
gn for Home Rule seized the nation and brought Ireland to the brink of a n
egotiated settlement with Britain. The architect of this campaign was John
Redmond\, the shrewd and assured leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of the 1916 Centenary\, RE:Public presents
an ambitious exhibition of contemporary art that enquires into two connec
ted centenaries\; that of the Italian Futurists celebrations of 'war noise
s' with 'noises from war\,' from the 1916 rising in Dublin. It runs from A
 pril 24th to 30th in Market House\, Gorey.\nEntitled RE:Public\, the exhib
ition will explore the use of 'sound in art' 100 years after 'The Art of N
oises\,' (written by Italian Futurist pioneer Luigi Russolo)\, was first m
ade public and published in book form. It will do this by utilising the ra
dio broadcast that was sent out by the rebels from the Dublin Wireless Sch
ool of Telegraphy on the corner of Abbey and O'Connell Street. This broadc
ast took place over the Easter Rising period and is widely considered one
of the first worldwide radio broadcasts\, if not the first.\nWhen exhibite
d RE:Public will present itself as a public sound installation utilising t
he newly installed sound system along the main street of Gorey\, Co. Wexfo
rd broadcasting the same Morse-code that aired in 1916 throughout its stre
ets. Alongside this there will be a public exhibition containing a newly c
onstructed sound installation within the upper chamber and an accompanying
informational area on both centenaries on the ground floor of the Market
 House\, Gorey.
